Multivariable Modelling Study Wins Maptek Geology Challenge 2024

The first prize in the 2024 Maptek Geology Challenge has been awarded to Miguel Aliaga Oblitas, Senior Geomodeller at Newmont Mining Corporation. Oblitas's submission demonstrated how Maptek's DomainMCF improved model consistency and significantly reduced processing time in advanced multivariable geological modelling. His efforts earned him a personal prize of US$500 and a six-month DomainMCF subscription for Newmont. The challenge saw strong competition, with Ed Lynch from SIMEC and Danielle Karbishev from Fortescue Mining sharing the second-place spot, showcasing diverse modelling techniques.

Oblitas emphasized the practical experience gained from working with real mine data and innovative methodologies that enhance geological modelling. His report detailed the challenges of predicting vein behavior at depth with limited data, noting improvements in model accuracy and efficiency.

"The winning entries were strong examples of tackling problems that are difficult to solve with traditional methods and demonstrated the use of novel techniques to control their geology." said Steve Sullivan, Senior Geology Specialist at Maptek.
