Liebherr-Australia has delivered the first electric excavator for BHP at the Western Australia Iron Ore Yandi mine. The R 9400 E 400-tonne class backhoe excavator is the first of its kind in BHP's global fleet, equipped with Liebherr's autonomous cable reel system to enhance machine mobility and operator safety. This development marks a significant step towards electrifying BHP’s mining operations, contributing to its sustainability goals.
The introduction of the R 9400 E reflects the ongoing collaboration between Liebherr and BHP, a partnership that has spanned two decades. Both companies share a commitment to innovation, safety, and environmental responsibility. This initiative aligns with BHP's objective of achieving net zero operational greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
“Liebherr is committed to supporting the mining industry’s shift towards sustainable practices with our electric excavator technology,” said Brian Boitano, executive general manager, sales and marketing, Liebherr-Australia. “The delivery of the R 9400 E at Yandi mine demonstrates the continued partnership between Liebherr and BHP in advancing zero-emission solutions.”
